Places may appear in more than one collection. Interpretive language follows official, tribal, or community-led sources wherever available.

Markers are evidence, not the whole story

Historical markers, plaques & designations.

A National Register property, a state highway marker, and a local plaque are different designations. This guide labels them separately and does not assume a marker is still present.

National Register listing

A listed property or district has federal documentation, but listing does not guarantee a roadside sign, museum access, parking, or permission to enter.

Highway marker

Confirm the marker ID, current coordinates, exact wording, sponsor, date, and a recent field observation before treating a marker as present.

Local plaque or monument

Record who installed it, when, what it commemorates, where it stands, and whether newer evidence changes or expands the interpretation.

Cemetery, church or private property

Respect posted rules, visiting hours, active worship, burials, residents, and property boundaries. Public-right-of-way viewing may be the only appropriate access.
